Schacht/Ulm Tele-Travelon 200mm f4

Deutsche Textversion /

English Translation (sorry for errors, no native english speaker)

The Schacht company was founded in Munich in 1948 by Albert Schacht,

who previously held a management position at Zeiss and Steinheil.

From 1954, Schacht manufactured his lenses in Ulm on the Danube.

Almost all lenses manufactured by Schacht are invoices from Ludwig Bertele, the inventor of the Sonnar.

An exception is this Tele-Travelon, whose bill comes from Hans Kleinwort .

The company was sold in 1967 and lens production stopped in 1970.

All Schacht lenses are mechanical and haptic delights,

Lenses couldn't be made of much higher quality.

As far as the performance of the optical calculations is concerned, the shaft lenses ran “under the radar” for a long time. It is only recently that the lenses have been rediscovered - and one wonders why they are not mentioned in the same name as Leica and Zeiss, because all the shaft lenses that I have had on the camera so far have been very convincing, and this is not the case only in the context of time.

Und somit kommen wir zum

Schacht/Ulm Tele-Travelon 200mm f4 R,

The Tele-Travelon was produced from 1966 to 1970.

Some pictures of this beautiful lens:

You can adapt the lens in the way I  described in the test of the Schacht/Ulm S-Travelon 50mm f1.8 R (i.e. with a helicoid adapter and thus possible shortening of the close focusing distance) or in the classic way using the Exa direct adapter Sony E-Mount as in the following pictures:

The combination of test camera (in my case the Sony Alpha 7RIII and Sony Alpha 7III), adapter and lens is clearly front-heavy.

This impression becomes even more extreme if you attach a (much needed!) sufficiently sized lens hood. Based on my experience, I definitely recommend "double length" - i.e. the combination of 2 telephoto lens hoods available by mail order .

The operation of the lens is flawless even after almost 60 years, the focus ring is perfectly dampened and can be felt directly via the wide zebra grooves.

The aperture adjustment, designed as a preselection aperture, is stepless.

As with all Schacht lenses, the workmanship is a dream. You just enjoy touching the lens, it conveys value.

f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11 - f16 :

As in all my tests, I start directly with what many consider to be the most important criterion:

The sharpness of the image.

To do this, I chose a test motif in which both the selected focus point in the center of the image (the awning of the house in the middle of the image) and the upper right corner of the image lie in one focal plane.

Since the pictures were taken in direct backlight,

They are only used to assess sharpness - so please do not include the contrasts in the evaluation.

You can see the aperture levels printed on the aperture ring in order

f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11 - f16 :

In the overall images you can clearly see the relatively clear vignetting at f4.

At f5.6 this is already visibly reduced,

but only at f8 does it no longer have any influence.

I made 100% enlargements of the focus point (the awning) in the middle of the image:

We start at f4 with a good to very good level of sharpness.

At f5.6 and f8 the sharpness in the center of the image is excellent.

f11 degrades somewhat due to diffraction, f16 even more.

I also created 100% enlargements from the corners of the image:

Here, too, we are already starting at a good level at f4.

At f5.6 the image corner also reaches a very good level, f8 increases to excellent.

Due to diffraction, the sharpness also drops again in the corner from f11 onwards.

Lateral chromatic aberrations are visible in the corner at all aperture values.

However, these can be removed without leaving any residue in the image editing by “checking the box”.

The image sharpness of the Schacht Tele-Travelon 200mm f4 is very appealing,

Quite surprising for a historical telephoto lens.

Already from an open aperture in the middle of the image, good to very good,

excellent at f8. The corners of the picture follow this pattern,

and at f8 the lens is excellent across the entire image.

Rendering & Bokeh

The focal length of 200mm is a somewhat special case in this test discipline.

Of course, with this long focal length there are always a lot of out of focus areas,

But it always depends on the quality of the blur.

In order to be convincing here, of course, in addition to the image sharpness at the focus point, the rendering of the out-of-focus areas must also be "nice" - although this "nice" depends very much on personal taste.

Some prefer rendering that is as soft as possible without residual structures, others love a "busy bokeh" with lots of structures - and of course there are all possible gradations between these two extremes.

The following pictures should help to better classify the Schacht Tele-Travelon 200mm f4 here.

To do this, I prepared an aperture row f4 - f5.6 - f8 -f11 at the "familiar" passage,

which shows you the  development of the background blur when stopping down :

The Schacht is very soft in the background  rendering at open aperture f4, and despite the strong contrasts and the bright reflections in the background, it cannot be disturbed.

Nice, large blur bubbles and the rendering remains pleasantly flat.

When stopping down, this characteristic remains (with increasing depth of field, of course).

The many aperture blades are also positively noticeable in the circular highlights.

My second recurring test motif also reinforces this impression.

Great sharpness at the point, and a nice, soft background resolution:

was ich bisher kennenlernen durfte.

At short distances, the Tele-Travelon's bokeh is one of the most beautiful and harmonious,

what I have been able to get to know so far.

Beautiful flat background drawing, unlimited highlight bubbles and a great sharpness-blur transition - the foreground bokeh is also pleasing:

This smooth rendering continues to medium and long distances.

In normal lighting conditions there is no outlining, no bubbling.

Everything is rendered perfectly flat.

Of course, the structures become more fragmented over long distances, but that is in the nature of things.

Fokusreihen / Focus-Series

For me it is very  interesting to a´focus on different distances with a telephoto lens from the same position. Because these images  make it easy to see and compare directly how the rendering develops at different distances.

First you see a building with trees in the background and a focus moving further and further from front to back:

Here the focus also moves through the depth of the image.

First on the small bush in the foreground, then on the cut edges of the tree stacks:

And finally, the focus is very close (on the first railing post directly in front of me) and very far away (on the gate in the valley).

No matter where the focus is - the rendering of the Tele-Travelon remains nice and soft,

both in front of and behind the focal plane.

What's particularly notable is that the foreground bokeh is just as flat as the background bokeh - which is very rare to find with telephoto lenses.

A wonderful sunset follows a foggy day

A cloudy, wet, foggy winter day -

Even at 2:30 p.m. it's still "dark outside"...

....great photo weather!

And in the evening there was a beautiful sunset.

The Tele-Travelon simply delivers unimpressed, regardless of whether details are wide open or stopped down to f5.6/f8 at long distances:

From this series a small sharpness comparison “from practice”:

The focus was on the church tower clock, you can see the aperture levels f4, f5.6 and f8.

Even when the aperture is open it is absolutely “sharp enough”, when the aperture is stopped down the basic sharpness and the micro-contrast increase a little:

Farbfehler / Chromatic Aberrations

In the color error section, the Schacht Tele-Travelon performs quite well for a lens without built-in special glasses.

The lateral chromatic aberrations (see the chapter on image sharpness when enlarging from the corner of the image) are present to a medium extent, but these can be completely removed in the image processing using "check mark".

The situation is somewhat different with longitudinal chromatic aberrations.

First, the well-known chrome rings - each with an enlargement in front of the focus plane and behind the focus plane:

You can see the purple/magenta edges on the chrome rings in the blur in front of the focus plane as well as the green edges behind the focus plane...

As an absolute endurance test, I photographed a chrome chain in the blazing sun - here you can see some purple fringing in the focal plane - but this is an absolute worst case scenario and deliberately provoked:

The following two pictures actually perfectly reflect what you can expect.

Most of the time it looks like the first picture: minimal color errors in front of and behind the focus plane, you have to enlarge the picture significantly to notice them.

The second image is a deliberately provoked error scenario: an ice surface with cracks was photographed in the direct midday sun: here you can clearly see the purple fringing in front of the focus plane and the green bokeh fringing behind the focus plane, even without magnification:

Bildserie / Picture series: "A walk in the Park"

A short afternoon walk took me to Elstersteinpark.

Low sun, strong differences in brightness, free-roaming animals - a real test for every telephoto lens:

Verzeichnung / Distortion

The Tele-Travelon's distortion is slightly cushion-shaped.

Since it is uniform and without a mustache, it could be completely corrected if necessary.

But it is so small that I never had to do this in practice.

Portraits

Normally 200mm is not a focal length,

which I use for portraits.

But on a beautiful winter morning the Tele-Travelon just happened to be on the camera,

and then you make the best of it.

And admittedly, I'm really surprised at how beautiful the portraits look with the Schacht .

Above all, the possibility of designing with a lot of foreground makes it really interesting.

And the sharpness and bokeh are impressive here too.

Bildserie: Ein sonniger Wintermorgen / Picture series: A sunny winter morning

In this series of images, the Tele-Travelon also proved to be very versatile and powerful.

In some pictures there is some purple fringing in the contrast edges, which are extreme in this lighting situation, and very slight influences on the contrast in the backlight - otherwise everything is perfect in the shaft, even in a lot of sun.

Verhalten im Gegenlicht / Flares and Ghosts

With the Schacht Tele-Travelon you have to be careful in the backlight, it is basically a backlight-sensitive lens.

However, this is also a chapter where you can make any lens look bad if you push and challenge it enough.

I didn't create any "test situations" specifically, I simply took extensive photographs with the lens and didn't take its age or weaknesses into account.

As I wrote in the introduction above, a long lens hood is mandatory for the Tele-Travelon. With the “double solution” that I have described, you are well equipped to deal with side light incidence and most grazing light situations.

Because the Schacht reacts allergically to direct light on the front lens, you immediately get contrast-reducing veils:

These problems are solved immediately if you use a sufficiently sized lens hood. You then have to push the lens harder to find the weaknesses:

In the first picture I shot against the low sun and there is a slight haze.

In the second picture I aimed slightly upwards, close to the ground, directly against the sun, there is a light haze in the lower area:

Und hier das Worst-Case-Szenario:

extrem starke tiefstehende Sonne in einem See reflektiert.

And here is the worst case scenario:

extremely strong low sun reflected in a lake.

You could hardly see it with the naked eye.

Even with the shaft lens, if the light source is directly in the image, there is a visible, irreparable loss of contrast.

If you recompose something, as I did with the second image, and the source of reflection is no longer directly in the image, the loss of contrast remains within reason.

Overall, the Tele-Travelon performs against the light in a way that corresponds to the standard of the time it was created, but of course this no longer meets our current requirements for modern lenses. You just have to pay attention to the lighting situation and you can't start taking photos without hesitation.

Bildserie: Hinein in die Abenddämmerung / Picture series: Into the dusk

During a short walk into the evening twilight, the shaft was able to demonstrate its great "macro" abilities again - thanks to the first early bloomers.

At close range it is really exceptionally sharp for a historical telephoto lens, and the bokeh is simply fantastically smooth.

Mein Fazit / Conclusion

For me, the Schacht Tele-Travelon 200mm f4 is one of the most interesting historical telephoto lenses

Surprisingly powerful for its time of production, and even today the lens still pleases with its strong character.

But first the objective evaluation criteria:

The image sharpness is good in the center when the aperture is open, and excellent from f8 onwards.

The corners of the image are also good from open aperture and are also excellent at f8.

The sharpness performance is also very good at close range, there is no drop-off here.

Distortion is minimally pincushion and chromatic aberration is well controlled apart from the occasional bokeh fringing.

The shaft shows its age when viewed against the light; contrast drops and flares are to be expected when viewed against the sun.

My assessments of image rendering are certainly subjective:

I really like how the lens draws.

The bokeh is beautifully harmonious and buttery smooth. It can really work magic, especially at close range, and paints beautifully.

Portraits with the Tele-Travelon also completely surprised me; it is very suitable for this with the combination of point sharpness and soft bokeh. Portraits with blurred foregrounds are particularly beautiful.

For me, one of the most beautiful historical telephoto lenses - both in terms of the lens itself and the image results it enables. Unfortunately it is very rare to find, there were probably only a few examples produced. If you find one, grab it - it's worth it.

As always, I look forward to your comments and thoughts about the lens and the test in the comments field under the final image gallery that follows!
