7Artisans 50mm f0.95 (APS-C)

Deutsche Textversion /

English Translation (sorry for errors, no native english speaker)

7Artisans is a young optics manufacturer from China,

who is entirely dedicated to the production of manual lenses.

In addition to optical calculations inspired by classic models,

7Artisans offers an ultra-fast series of fixed focal lengths for APS-C cameras.

In addition to the 25mm f0.95 and the 35mm f0.95, this has been available since last year

7Artisans 50mm f0.95,

that I would like to introduce to you here.

The 7Artisans is excellently crafted. The tube is made entirely of metal, and all rings run softly and smoothly. The clickless aperture should be particularly interesting for filmmakers.

Here's a little Christmas unboxing. of the lens, photographed with the Isco Cinelux 80mm f2:

Bildschärfe auf mittlere Distanz / Sharpness on medium distance

In order to show the image sharpness at an average distance of a few meters, I used an aperture row of the markings printed on the aperture ring

f0.95 - f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 - f8 -f16

created for you.

The subject is a playground suspension bridge, the focused center of the image and the edge of the image lie in the same plane of focus.

For an overview, here are the overall images:

In order to enable an accurate assessment, I have made extreme enlargements of the focus point (the 3rd screw knob from the left in the top row) from these images.

In the middle of the image we start at f0.95 with a good level of sharpness. The spherical aberration creates a slightly softer sharpness impression, and the contrast is not yet there at full strength.

Already at f1.4 there is a jump to a very good level of sharpness, and the spherical aberration also disappears.

At f2 the contrasts also become crisp and the image sharpness is at an excellent level of sharpness.

At all other aperture values between f2 and f8, the performance remains equivalent to f2, only at f16 a very slight drop in sharpness due to diffraction becomes visible.

To evaluate the outermost corner of the image, I used the lump at the top left of the overall image:

Insgesamt also eine praxisgerechte Auslegung.

In the corner of the picture the rating looks different:

We start at a weak level with the aperture open, which remains weak up to f2.8 with minimal improvement.

At f4 there is a jump in sharpness to decent values. f8 remains very similar.

Only at maximum stop down to f16 does the outermost corner of the image become very sharp.

Overall, a practical design. Good from open aperture in the middle, very good from f1.4 - excellent from f2.8. You have to stop down to f4 to get details in the corners of the image. Only at values above f8 does it become crisp and sharp right into the corners.

Schärfe und Rendering an der Naheinstellgrenze / Sharpness and rendering at short distances

For details at the closest focusing limit, the assessment shown above remains the same. Here the glow or veil of spherical aberration comes into play a little more than at medium distances.

I have also made a series of printed aperture values for you, I have only left out f16 here:

In addition to the sharpness performance, this series of images also allows a good evaluation of the bokeh at short distances to the subject. The backgrounds are wonderfully creamy at all aperture levels, and outlining is not an issue here. Very nice!

I made the following aperture series (f0.95 - f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4) to show the influence of the aperture blades on the background highlights.

Thanks to the 13 aperture blades, in this example they remain circular even at f4 without any visible structuring due to the shape of the aperture:

f0.95 - f1.4 - f2

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In the following series of pictures you can clearly see the shape of the aperture when stopping down. It's a shame, given the high number of slats installed, a better result could have been achieved.

In addition, there are disturbing structures in the “bubbles” in the highlights in the middle of the image. on, they could come from an imperfect polishing of the lens sets.

f0.95 - f1.4 - f2

What is interesting, however, is the development of the highlights. At f0.95 there are very pronounced "cateyes", already relatively far towards the center of the image, not just in the edge areas.

Stopping down to f1.4 eliminates this completely, and you get almost circular panes all the way to the edge.

In practice, the rendering at short distances is very nice.

If the subject is sharp, the backgrounds are resolved very smoothly.

The lens even manages to block out critical structures well.

Here are some image examples:

Rendering auf mittlere Nahdistanzen / Rendering at close/medium distances

At distances of plus/minus 1m from the subject, the rendering remains nice and soft, even if the image backgrounds are far away.

In the following row the focus was on the front edge about 1m away, the distance to the houses in the background is about 50m.

The aperture values are f0.95 - f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 - f8:

The backgrounds remain nice and soft across all aperture levels as the depth of field increases.

Hardly any outlining, no tendency to swirl - even the bushes and shrubs "half the distance" to the houses are pleasantly resolved.

Other examples at a similar distance:

Rendering auf Portraitdistanzen / Rendering at portrait-distances

With a 50mm f0.95 lens for APS-C (equivalent to a 75mm f1.4 in 35mm format), the rendering for people shots is of course particularly interesting.

And here the 7Artisans is completely in its element. Already at f0.95 the sharpness is absolutely fine and sufficient - and this is where it “helps”. also the gentle glow of spherical aberration.

The very beautiful, soft backgrounds contribute to the good portrait suitability,

as well as the fact that the sharpness remains good even with subjects at the edge when you focus on them.

Verzeichnung / Distortion

Das Objektiv verzeichnet sichtbar tonnenförmig:

The lens' distortion is visibly barrel-shaped:

However, since there is no mustache-like distortion, this can easily be corrected using image editing (in my case, Lightroom).

Here is an example without correction and with a correction value of +5:

You have to use this for critical motifs such as architecture, but in practice it hasn't played a role for me so far.

Farbfehler / Chromatic Aberrations

Aside from sharpness in the outermost corners, the 7Artisans 50mm f0.95's biggest weakness is color aberrations.

I would like to demonstrate the extent of this to you with the following example. The focus was on the church tower clock, so one can assume a “worst case” scenario here.

Sharp light-dark contrasts against the sky and focusing at long distances, you should be able to find all sorts of chromatic aberrations here.

First the overall images at f0.95 - f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 -f4 - f8:

It's worth taking a look at the two crosses in the overall picture. Both the left cross in front of the focus plane and the cross on the tower behind the focus plane show visible color errors up to and including f2.8.

If you enlarge the center of the image, you can see the full extent of the color errors:

At f0.95 and f1.4 the optics are not yet able to separate accurately. That's why you can see a magenta/purple stripe on the gable and also on the edge of the tower that "sticks out" over the contrasting edge.

At f2 and f2.8 you can only see some purple fringing right at the edge.

From f4 we have reached a very good level and there are no longer any visible color errors.

In "normal" In use, these errors are relatively inconspicuous (who photographs architecture at f0.95 or f1.4?).

Occasionally there is some green bokeh fringing. Here is a pair of images at f0.95 at different focus distances from the same location.

You can see this clearly on the car in the background on the right:

Verhalten im Gegenlicht / Flares and Ghosts

Here the 7Artisans performs very well for such a high-aperture lens with correspondingly large glass surfaces.

Of course, in this discipline you can make ANY lens look bad if you provoke it enough. In "normal" However, the 7Artisans cut a very reasonable figure here. Here are 2 images at sunrise full against the sun shining through at f8:

Slight traces of ghosting can be found on the side opposite the sun.

Fully against a light bulb (with the aperture wide open) there is only a haze and loss of contrast at certain angles as in the second image:

Unfortunately, aperture stars are very difficult to obtain due to the rounded aperture blades. You have to stop down to the maximum, and even then they are only very faint.

The lack of ghosting is also convincing here:

Insgesamt also hier eine überzeugende, zeitgemäße Leistung.

All in all, this is a convincing, contemporary performance.

Rendering auf weite Distanz / Rendering at long distances

At long distances, the lens impresses with its good sharpness and nice contrasts.

The edges are sharp from f4, but for sharp corners you have to stop it down further than f8 (which I do with landscape photos anyway to get enough depth of field).

Here are some examples at different aperture levels.

Kleine Winterserie "First Snow" / Picture series: "First Snow"

Here I have put together a small series of pictures from last winter for you, which shows the versatility of this beautiful lens. First some photos of the "Word Sail" in snowfall (the vignette in some pictures is unfortunately caused by a lens hood that is too long, the lens cannot do anything about this...):

A few minutes later and a few meters lower, things looked different in and around the Asian Garden in Lebach....

In my opinion, the lens delivers very good, practical performance across all aperture levels.

You can easily separate important image elements from the background at open aperture values as well as get sharp images across the entire image when the aperture is very dim.

This always with good contrasts and beautiful rendering.

Another motif from this series at f0.95 and f1.4:

Mir gefällt hier das f0.95-Bild sehr gut, but your mileage may vary....

I think you can clearly see the difference here - as always, it's a matter of taste which you like better:

Less contrast and some glow at f0.95, crisper image impression at f1.4.

I really like the f0.95 image here, but your mileage may vary....

Mein Fazit / Conclusion

The 7Artisans 50mm f0.95 is in its "core competencies" very nice lens for portraits and “painting”. of details at an open aperture.

The image sharpness is good in the center even with the aperture open, and very good when stopped down slightly to 1.4. From f2.8 it is excellent.

The edges of the image are very good from f4 onwards, the corners of the image need more than f8 to be crisp and sharp.

The bokeh is very soft at close and medium distances, but at long distances you have to pay some attention to the backgrounds, as there can be some outlining.

I particularly like the display of background highlights because they can be easily controlled: for pronounced cateyes, use an open aperture, stopping down slightly to f1.4 makes them circular right up to the edge areas.

The lens is not so well corrected for color errors at open aperture values. Purple fringing is easy to find, especially on contrasting edges. You can also sometimes find green fringes in the bokeh.

The distortion is visibly barrel-shaped, but uniform and easily correctable.

Despite these existing negative aspects, one must not forget that we are talking about a high-speed lens with f0.95 , i.e. a lens that plays with the limits of optics. The errors are surprisingly well corrected and we have a look that is absolutely suitable for everyday use with the “bonus”. the extreme light intensities.

And all of this at an amazingly low price with very nice workmanship.

In my opinion, a very nice recommendation for anyone who is looking for a high-speed portrait lens for their APS-C camera.

Finally, a photo gallery with some of the shots I was able to take with the lens. As always, I'm happy to hear your opinions and suggestions, feel free to write them to me in the comments below!

Danke für die wieder sehr gelungene Vorstellung.
Das könnte doch ein schönes Weihnachtsgeschenk werden :)
