Gewicht: 267g
Blende: von f3.4 bis f16, stufenlos, 5 Blendenlamellen
Nahgrenze: 1m
Optisches System: 5 Linsen in 3 Gruppen

Bauzeit: 1966-1972

The Carl Zeiss Dynarex is the portrait lens for the Carl Zeiss Icarex.

It is based on Voigtländer's calculation (Voigtländer belonged to Zeiss at the time) for the Bessamatic, but it was nevertheless modified for the Icarex.
The original Voigtländer version had 5 lenses in 4 groups (lens section here: http://www.der-klinterklater.de/dynarex.html ),
The Carl Zeiss version for the Icarex has 5 lenses in only 3 groups (lens section here: http://allphotolenses.com/lenses/item/c_4759.html).
It looks like the front, isolated group has now been combined into a cemented link.

The Voigtländer Bessamatic was a central shutter camera. Due to the technical characteristics, the original Voigtländer lens had a very long close focusing distance.

This could be significantly improved in the Zeiss version presented here.

Here are some technical data:
Length: 42.1mm
Weight: 267g
Aperture: from f3.4 to f16, continuously variable, 5 aperture blades

Closest focusing distance: 1m
Optical system: 5 lenses in 3 groups

Construction period: 1966-1972

Visually and tactilely, the Dynarex, like all Icarex lenses, is really very beautiful.

Made entirely of metal, with very nice (and easy to grip) milled aluminum rings for aperture and focusing.

The images in my review were taken with the Sony Alpha 7III and adjusted in Lightroom.

I adapted the lens in the following way:

Icarex BM to Canon EF adapter, then a Canon EF to Sony E-mount helicoid adapter,

which enables additional focusing in the close range.

This way I can bring the 1m close focus limit to a better value of around 50cm.

I would like to start with the sharpness performance at long distances towards infinity.

To do this, I created an aperture series with the aperture values f3.4, f4, f5.6 and f8.

For an overview, here is the overall picture at f5.6:

From this picture I made 100% enlargements of the church tower,

where the focus was.

Here are these 100% magnifications in the order f3.4, f4, f5.6, and f8:

At f3.4 the image is not really sharp, especially strongly overexposed due to the spherical aberration.
At f4 the blooming is significantly less and the sharpness also increases somewhat.
At f5.6 the sharpness is already very good, and the blooming is also a thing of the past.
At f8, sharpness and contrast are at a very good level.

You have to keep in mind that at that time lenses were optimized for certain shooting distances. And with a 90mm portrait lens, this is probably more in the range of a few meters (head/shoulder portrait distance) than infinity.

I would like to demonstrate this with the following 3 image examples. They are taken at the distance of a normal shoulder portrait with aperture levels f3.4, f4 and f5.6:

At f3.4 the sharpness is still age-appropriate "flattering" and because of the spherical aberration and low contrast, the image appears soft.

At f4 the sharpness clearly increases and the spherical aberration is also reduced somewhat. The contrasts still remain weak. f4 would be the aperture value for portraits if you want to combine high basic sharpness with contrast softness.

For high sharpness of detail and good contrast, choose aperture f5.6, and spherical aberration is no longer an issue.

In my opinion, this is a very practical interpretation of image sharpness for a portrait lens.

A very important criterion for a portrait lens is of course the quality of the background representation, i.e. the bokeh.

And this is where the Dynarex really excels. It draws beautiful backgrounds despite its low aperture of f3.4. Here are some examples of this:

Despite the existing weaknesses in sharpness at longer distances when the aperture is open, the Dynarex enables great landscape photos.

You just have to stop down if you need sharpness across the entire image.

What I always really like about such old lenses is the good definition of the depths,

also due to the weaker contrasts compared to modern lenses.

Of course, you have to be particularly careful with an old lens in the backlight.

As long as the sun is not directly in the field of vision, you have surprisingly few problems with loss of contrast and flares, here are 3 pictures against the obscured low sun:

However, if the sun is in the field of view, you get a lot of flares, loss of contrast and lens flare, which can ruin images.

However, you can also use this behavior for creative design.

Artificial light sources perform surprisingly well in the dark,

There is no reason to complain here.

Links jeweils f3.4, rechts jeweils f5.6:

Next I took a few pairs of images, each at aperture f3.4 and f5.6,

which enable good sharpness and bokeh comparisons.

Left f3.4, right f5.6:

The color errors are age-appropriate; both chromatic aberrations in front of and behind the focus plane as well as bokeh fringing are noticeable in high-contrast situations, but not extreme.

Mein Fazit / Conclusion

A lens that is very useful in its basic discipline of portraits. At f3.4 it's still flatteringly soft with low contrast, from f4 it's sharp and from f5.6 the sharpness is great.

It impresses with its beautifully soft bokeh, a lens for "painting".

As an all-round/landscape lens it is very usable and impresses with beautiful colors and well-drawn depths.

The color errors are present, but the extent is not dramatic.

The vignetting is clearly noticeable at f3.4 and f4, but is negligible from f5.6.

A very beautiful, high-quality and haptic old glass that still impresses with its strengths today. You have to know your weaknesses and work around them.
