Carl Zeiss Jena Prakticar 50mm f1.4 (Version 1)

Deutsche Textversion /

English Translation (sorry for errors, no native english speaker)

The Carl Zeiss Jena Prakticar 50mm f1.4 is the fast normal lens for the Praktica B series that was produced in 1978.

I would like to introduce version 1 of this lens ( 1st calculation with lenses containing thorium ),

which was produced until 1983 and was then replaced by version 2 of this lens for cost reasons.

If you would like to delve deeper into the development history of the lens, we recommend the great website www.zeissikonveb.de .

You can find information about the Prakticar 50mm f1.4 on this page here .

The clear distinguishing feature is the labeling of the lenses:

In version 1 it is on the side of the tube, in version 2 it is on the front ring as usual.

In the following pictures, version 1 is always shown on the left and version 2 on the right:

Einige technische Daten der Version 1:

Länge: 43mm (bei unendlich-Stellung)

Gewicht: 290g

Filterdurchmesser: 52mm

Optisches System: 7 Linsen in 6 Gruppen

Blende: von f1.4 bis f16, 6 Blendenlamellen

Naheinstellgrenze: 36cm

Hier einige Bilder des Objektives:

Some technical data of version 1:

Length: 43mm (at infinity position)

Weight: 290g

Filterdiameter: 52mm

Optical system: 7 lenses in 6 groups

Aperture: from f1.4 to f16, 6 aperture blades

Close focusing distance: 36cm

Here are some pictures of the lens:

The lens is not internally focusing.

It is shortest at infinity position (left picture),

When focusing in the close range it becomes significantly longer (right picture):

Adapted to the test camera (the Sony Alpha 7RIII) using the Praktika B to Sony E-mount adapter, the result is a combination that is both visually and haptically harmonious.

Controls that are easy to reach, not front-heavy - an ensemble that fits well in the hand.

Another adaptation option that I have often used is to use a thin Praktica B to Canon EOS adapter ring.

This has the advantage that you can work from Canon EOS to Sony E-Mount with a helicoid adapter,

which enables additional close-range focusing (the helicoid adapter is like a variable intermediate ring, but with which infinity is also possible).

For a detailed analysis of the image sharpness, I made a series of apertures from the tripod at a long distance, in which both the focused image center and the corner of the image lie in the same plane of focus.

Aperture values of the series are: f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11

f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11:

In the overview images you can immediately see the vignette at open aperture f1.4 and at f2.

This is already significantly reduced at f2.8 and is almost imperceptible from f4 onwards.

For precise sharpness analysis, I made enlargements of the focus point in the middle of the image and the top right corner.

Here are the enlargements from the center, again in the order

f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11:

f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11

Even at open aperture f1.4, the sharpness in the center is very good - but still heavily overshadowed by the glow of the spherical aberration and with weak contrast.

At f2, sharpness and contrast increase significantly to an already very good level, and the glow is already significantly reduced.

From f2.8 to f8 the sharpness and contrast performance in the center of the image is excellent,

at f11 slightly weaker due to diffraction.

The enlargements from the corner of the picture follow, again in the same order

f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11

As expected, things look a little different in the outermost corner of the picture.

At f1.4, sharp details can already be seen - but they are completely overshadowed by a strong glow and the strong vignette. Lateral chromatic aberrations can also be seen.

At f2, the contrasts mainly increase and the vignette decreases.

Only at f2.8 does the veil of spherical aberration clear and the corner darkening is no longer so extreme.

At f4 we have already arrived in the good area in the corner of the image,

at f5.6 the corner is very good (e.g. the roof tiles are clearly resolved).

Nevertheless, there is another small increase at f8 and f11, which is visible, for example, on the roof of the shed.

Overall, a good, age-appropriate performance. Still a bit "dreamy" when the aperture is open, the center of the image is very sharp from f2 onwards, and from f5.6 onwards the Prakticar is excellent across the entire diagonal up to the corner of the image.

Portraits

I particularly like using the Prakticar 50mm f1.4 for portraits.

Even at half-body distance, it is sharp enough from the aperture open,

and its distinctive rendering makes it unmistakable with its own "signature".

When taking portraits in backlight it is very sensitive, you have to know that and include the flares in the composition - but even then you get "special" photos.

From this photo at f1.4 I have an enlargement of the focus point for you -

In my opinion the Prakticar is “sharp enough”

with lots of details and a pleasant softness - thanks to the spherical aberration.

Vergrößerung vom Fokuspunkt des zuletzt gezeigten Bildes / Crop from focus point of the picture shown above
Vergrößerung vom Fokuspunkt des zuletzt gezeigten Bildes / Crop from focus point of the picture shown above

In my opinion, the Prakticar 50mm f1.4 is a very nice lens for photographing people.

For me it is already sharp enough at wide open aperture, from f2 it is very sharp.

Unfortunately, even with low stopping down on f2, for example, you immediately have "stop signs" in background highlights due to the shape of the aperture (see the 3rd picture, for example).

You have to use the lens carefully against the light - you're immediately dealing with strong flares.

which can hardly be avoided (and then have to be included in the composition).

Rendering & Bokeh

To assess the bokeh, I used a series of apertures on my popular test subject,

the metal fence in the passage, created for you.

I focused on the top screw on the post on the right side.

You can see the aperture levels f1.4 - f2 - f2.8 - f4 and f5.6:

I find the bokeh to be soft and unobtrusive at all aperture levels in this scenario,

The sharpness-blur transitions are also pleasing.

At f1.4 it is still a bit nervous in the lower left corner, at f2 it is much quieter there too.

For me, f2 would be "the aperture of choice" for soft backgrounds - but then there shouldn't be any highlights because of the hexagons that would then be created.

Here is another, more frequently shown test motif:

At medium focus distances, the bokeh has a high “recognition value”.

It is not very soft, but rather structured - especially in the edge and corner areas.

There is a slight tendency to swirl, but significantly less severe than with other fast 50mm lenses.

Highlight bubbles are easy to create - but they only have weak boundary lines and are therefore rarely decisive.

In general, the sunnier and/or more reflections in the background, the more nervous the bokeh.

Since bokeh is always a matter of taste, I'll show you many examples from a wide variety of scenarios so that you can see for yourself whether you like it:

Here is a small row of 3 apertures at a shorter distance -

I find the bokeh to be very harmonious at all 3 aperture levels (f1.4 - f2 - f2.8):

A weak point of the Prakticar 50mm f1.4 is the blurring behavior BEFORE the focus plane,

Especially in the corners it doesn't look very nice with "appropriate" motifs -

This problem is no longer visible at f2.8 at the latest.

It's especially worth taking a look at the reeds in the bottom left corner.

Again at f1.4 - f2 - f2.8:

The following pictures are intended to shed light on the behavior of the lens at short focus distances.

The left image was taken at the closest focusing limit of the lens, the right image with an additional extension of the helicoid adapter (a comparable effect can be achieved with extension rings).

While the image at the closest focusing limit is still “just” sharp when the aperture is open,

the right picture is just soft and glowy.

In contrast to other brand f1.4 lenses, the Prakticar is simply significantly less sharp at close range and falls victim to the spherical aberration that then becomes prevalent.

In the next examples I took photos with the aperture open on the left and with f2 in the photos on the right.

You can immediately see a clear increase in sharpness. Unfortunately, you immediately have the hexagons in the background.

And DESPITE all the sharpness limitations, you can get great images with the Prakticar at close range at f1.4 that have their own signature.

Glowy and creamy - almost watercolor-like:

Bildserie: Ein Sommertag in Lucca / Picture Series: A summer Day in Lucca

This summer a Prakticar set accompanied me to Tuscany.

And in beautiful Lucca, the Prakticar 50mm f1.4 was used almost exclusively for the “slightly different” holiday photos.

In my opinion a beautiful rendering.

Admittedly, it's not exactly neutral.

But that's one reason for me to use old lenses - you should definitely be able to recognize their own handwriting!

Verzeichnung / Distortion

There is a slight, fortunately uniform barrel-shaped distortion.

This is not a problem and, if in doubt, can be corrected without loss during image processing.

Farbfehler / Chromatic aberrations

Already in the focus range I noticed the slight lateral chromatic aberrations,

which appear especially in the edge areas when the aperture is open.

However, these can be easily removed using a 1-click solution in image editing.

The longitudinal chromatic aberrations are more significant and are visible at contrast edges when the aperture is open. Fortunately, they can no longer be seen when the lens is stopped down to f2.

The following pictures show you the extent (f1.4, resulting in an enlargement and f2):

The most noticeable thing is green bokeh fringing when the aperture is open, which is not uncommon with this lens.

Bildserie / Picture Series: Old Lens and old Car....

During my last visit to the garage I found this VW Beetle that was being rebuilt in the dark hall. The Prakticar is a great lens for available light photography.

Nightlights...

Even at night, the Prakticar is “in its element” due to its light intensity.

You have to be careful with strong light sources, as there are definitely problems with reflections.

Verhalten im Gegenlicht / Flares and Ghosts

The only major weak point of the lens is its backlight behavior.

The bare, untreated aperture blades of the lens pose a big problem because they cause strong reflections between the aperture and the sensor.

That's why you always have large purple/magenta colored blobs in the picture when you dim down images against the sun.

You can't avoid this at all, you can only mitigate the strength a little by recomposing:

This is definitely a limitation in usability.

On the other hand, with my huge collection of images with the Prakticar, this only posed a problem with a handful.

In the worst case, the following flares can occur when the aperture is open:

So a certain degree of caution is required, as I already mentioned with the portraits.

In practice, the Prakticar is simply a great lens - very sharp when stopped down and with characterful rendering when the aperture is wide open.

Here are 2 example images - left at f1.4, right at f5.6:

Mein Fazit / Conclusion

The Carl Zeiss Jena Prakticar 50mm f1.4 (version 1) is a very good, fast normal lens.

The sharpness performance is somewhat weaker at open aperture, especially at close range, than with comparable other brand lenses (e.g. Canon FD 50mm f1.4 or Olympus OM Zuiko 50mm f1.4).

However, this is no longer an issue from a portrait distance onwards.

When you look at the aperture range from far away, you can see that the center of the image is already very decent at f1.4, and excellent from f2.8 onwards. The corners of the image need f5.6 to be beyond any doubt.

Distortion isn't a problem, and color errors don't play a big role either.

It's a shame that the aperture design creates two problems:

The only 6 aperture blades ensure stop signs even at low levels of glare.

And the fact that bare metal was used as the material for the aperture now causes strong internal reflections when used on digital cameras.

Nevertheless, the Prakticar is one of my favorite 50mm lenses, and this is due to its interesting rendering with the "special" background behavior.

A little more structured in a pleasant way than with other lenses, without any extreme tendency to bubble or swirl. Just beautiful...

Finally, as always, a picture gallery - and below in the comments section I look forward to your comments and observations.
