Schacht/Ulm S-Travelon 50mm f1.8 R

Deutsche Textversion /

English Translation (sorry for errors, no native english speaker)

The Schacht company was founded in Munich in 1948 by Albert Schacht,

who previously held a management position at Zeiss and Steinheil.

From 1954, Schacht manufactured his lenses in Ulm on the Danube.

All lenses manufactured by Schacht are invoices from Ludwig Bertele , the inventor of the Sonnar.

The company was sold in 1967 and lens production stopped in 1970.

All Schacht lenses are mechanical and haptic delights,

Lenses couldn't be made of much higher quality.

As far as the performance of the optical calculations is concerned, the Schacht lenses ran “under the radar” for a long time. It is only recently that the lenses have been rediscovered - and one wonders why they are not mentioned in the same name as Leica and Zeiss, because all the Schacht lenses that I have had on the camera so far have been very convincing, and this is not the case only in the context of time.

Und somit kommen wir zum

Schacht/Ulm S-Travelon 50mm f1.8 R,

Optisches System: 6 Elemente in 4 Gruppen

Blende: von f1.8 bis f16, 6 Blendenlamellen

Gewicht: 193g

Länge: 37,5mm

Filterdurchmesser: 49mm

Naheinstellgrenze: 50cm

And so we come to

Schacht/Ulm S-Travelon 50mm f1.8 R,

which I would like to introduce to you in this detailed lens test.

I am also very pleased that Ute Kopka provided me with many images from cameras of “other formats”.

There was the S-Travelon with a connection for Exa and M42.

The lens presented here has the Exa connection and also the shutter release bridge.

This is completely missing in the M42 version.

Some technical data of the lens:

Optical system: 6 elements in 4 groups

Aperture: from f1.8 to f16, 6 aperture blades

Weight: 193g

Length: 37.5mm

Filter diameter: 49mm

Closest focusing distance: 50cm

The S-Travelon was produced from 1964 to 1970.

At f1.8, it was the fastest normal lens produced in large series for the Exakta cameras across manufacturers.

Some pictures of this beautiful lens:

I adapted the S-Travelon to the two test cameras, the Sony Alpha 7III and the Sony Alpha 7RIII, using the following adapters:

You can see the thin adapter ring from Exa to Canon EF in the picture on the right.

The lens is inserted into these.

Then the whole thing is connected to a helicoid (close focusing) adapter (on the left in the picture).

When finished, the adapter-lens combination looks like this

(The first picture shows the infinite position, the second picture with maximum extension into the close range):

The big advantage of this type of adaptation is that you can focus on infinity as well as in the extreme close-up (macro) range without having to “convert” as with intermediate rings.

Of course, you can also buy direct adapters from Exa to Sony E-Mount without a macro function.

Once adapted to the test camera, the result is a very harmonious combination.

All controls are easy to reach and the whole thing is not front-heavy.

The milled zebra rings can be felt immediately and blindly, but the focusing has a pleasant resistance and still runs smoothly after 60 years.

The aperture ring works just as well - you just have to make sure that the aperture switch is always set to M (which you can clearly see from the red color - at A the control field is green).

Bildschärfe / Sharpness

Bildschärfe auf weite Distanz / Sharpness at long distance

I have created a series of images for you to evaluate sharpness, in which both the center and the corner of the image are in the same sharpness plane.

The focal point was the awning of the house to the left of the street leading up. The house in the upper right corner of the picture is in the same focal plane.

In the overall images you can clearly see the clear vignetting at f1.8.

At f2.8 this is visibly reduced and from f4 on it is completely negligible.

To accurately assess sharpness, I made 100% enlargements of the focus point in the center of the image (the awning of the house):

We start with a very good level of sharpness in the middle of the image at an open aperture of f1.8, but there is a gentle glow due to the spherical aberration and the contrast is not yet fully there.

From f2.8 onwards the sharpness is excellent, the glow has also disappeared - the contrasts need f4 to reach their maximum

At f11 the impression of sharpness is weaker again due to diffraction.

I also made 100% enlargements of the corners of the image:

We also start at a good level of sharpness in the corner of the image at f1.8, but the spherical aberration in the corner is noticeable as a very clear haze - and the corner is clearly darkened by the vignetting.

In comparison, f2.8 actually only gets brighter, but the glow remains

.

At f4 the sharpness increases to a very good level and the spherical aberration disappears completely,

At f5.6 the contrasts are also there.

At f8 there is no longer any relevant further increase, and f11 is again slightly weaker due to diffraction.

The S-Travelon shows a really good sharpness performance,

not only in the context of the time, but also by today's standards.

In the center the image sharpness is very good from open aperture with a gentle glow,

Excellent from f2.8.

The corners of the image are also very neat even when the aperture is open,

and from f4 good to very good. At f5.6 the Schacht is very sharp across the entire image.

Bildschärfe im Nahbereich / Sharpness at short distances

At a shorter distance, here at the native focusing limit of the lens, the sharpness performance is analogous to the assessment at infinity.

Already sharp at wide open aperture, but still slightly overshadowed by the gentle glow of the spherical aberration - excellent from f2.8 onwards and stopping down further only increases the depth of field:

When  the helicoid adapter is turned out to the maximum , i.e. the close-up limit is extremely shortened, the spherical aberration increases significantly and the image becomes soft and dreamy when the aperture is open.

Already at f2.8 there is a visible increase in sharpness, and from f4 it is very good again.

At these extreme magnifications, the level of sharpness becomes approximately 1 f-stop weaker.

Bildserie: Ein Sommertag in Bad Dürkheim / Picture Series: A summer day in Bad Dürkheim

In my opinion, series of images can “tell” you a lot about a lens.

Because they provide information about how it works in practice outside of controlled test scenarios.

On a hot summer day we visited the picturesque Bad Dürkheim with its spa park and the large graduation tower.

All details shots were taken at an open aperture of f1.8, but stopped down images at f8 can also be seen:

Rendering & Bokeh

This is a really important test discipline for me,

although naturally always subjective in the evaluation.

But what use has the sharpest lens if the out-of-focus areas appear ugly.

With a "historical" lens like this I always find this particularly interesting -

because at the time of its development this was certainly not a criterion,

Bokeh has only become more and more important in recent years.

You can see how the image backgrounds develop when stopping down in the following aperture row at the passage known from my other tests:

In these images you can clearly see some of the basic imaging properties of the blurred backgrounds.

With the aperture open, the rendering at this distance (approx. 1m from the focus point) is nice and soft with little residual structure and a very slightly noticeable swirl.

At f2.8 and f4 the swirl has disappeared and even beyond the increasing depth of field the background rendering becomes a little more unsettled.

At f5.6 the image looks more harmonious again.

My second recurring motif is also revealing:

Beautiful velvety rendering of the backgrounds with distinctive bubbles and clear swirl.

You certainly can't speak of neutral rendering here, but it has a very unique character:

A lot can be deduced from these examples: We are definitely not dealing with a neutral, flat image rendering; there are clear aberrations.

At short distances, the rendering of the S-Travelon shaft is very striking and has a high recognition value for me.

The difference in the background behavior at the native focus limit and the one reduced by the helicoid is very large: While you can still see clear structures and borders on contrast edges at the normal close-up limit, it becomes buttery smooth in the "macro" range.

I have 3 example pairs for you here, each at the native close limit and the second image using the helicoid adapter:

The following example gallery at short distances with and without the use of helicoids in a wide variety of lighting situations gives you a good overview of the idiosyncratic but, in my opinion, very interesting bokeh of the Schacht S-Travelon 50mm f1.8.

I find that the often invoked "character" in image rendering is really present here:

I am pleased that a dear photographer colleague, Ute Kopka, provided me with many more photos with the S-Travelon.

Because she uses the lens on different formats than I do.

The following examples were taken on the Fujifilm XT-4, a camera with an APS-C format sensor. I think that you can see clear differences from the 35mm images.

By eliminating the edge areas, the recordings swirl significantly less - but the beautiful bubbles can also be seen on the "small" sensor:

Ute also likes to use the lens on her analog cameras, and so we can show you examples of its “original” use here -

Images on Orwo UN54 black and white film at 100ASA, taken with the bay on the Praktica MTL5b.

Bildserie: "Sommer 2021 - eine heiße Angelegenheit..." / Picture Series: Summer of '21 -a hot thing...

Some of you will still remember the incredibly hot summer of 2021.

There was a heat wave that lasted several weeks, and so my "photography time" mostly fell on the edge of the day - the colors of the pictures reflect this...

Verzeichnung / Distortion

The lens' distortion is slightly barrel-shaped,

Fortunately, uniform without a moustache.

If necessary, this slight distortion could be completely removed during image processing.

Portraits

The Schacht has become one of my favorite 50mm lenses for portraits.

The gentle glow when the aperture is open while maintaining sharpness are simply ideal here.

The rendering of the backgrounds has a really strong character - so you have to design with this property in mind, but you also get very nice results.

You have to be careful when taking photos against the sun - when the sun is directly in the field of view, there are significant drops in contrast, but you can also use this consciously.

Ute Kopka also provided me with some of her wonderful, touching portraits of her parents and senior dog Olli for this lens test.

The following shots were taken digitally with the Fuji XT-4.

The 50mm seems like 75mm on the APS-C sensor, resulting in a wonderful image angle for portraits - both of people and animals.

And also analogue on ORWO UN54 black and white film, the S-Travelon on the Praktica MTL5b is completely convincing with its wonderful combination of sharpness and beautiful rendering:

Farbfehler / Chromatic Aberrations

The lens is surprisingly strong in this discipline.

As already seen in the image sharpness series, there are very slight lateral chromatic aberrations - these can be corrected with one click in image editing.

Longitudinal chromatic aberrations are also found,

Here is an example image for evaluation.

First you see a picture of chrome eyelets and an enlargement of in front of and behind the focus plane -

There are very slight traces of purple fringing in front of the focus plane.

The green chromatic aberrations behind the plane of focus, which are also often found in "real world" images in the form of green bokeh fringing, are clearer:

Bildserie: Auf dem "Bettelwald-Weg" an einem trüben Sonntag / Picture series: "Bettelwald-trail" on a grey sunday

On a cloudy Sunday morning in March I was walking along the Bettelwald trail.

Here, in addition to details shots, I took many pictures stopped down to f8, which show how good the lens is across the entire image. Sharp, high-contrast, pleasant colors.

If only the hotspots in the middle of the image that occasionally occur in strong glare and diffuse light weren't there due to the reflective aperture blades (more on this in the chapter on backlight behavior).

Verhalten im Gegenlicht / Flares and Ghosts

The Schacht S-Travelon 50mm f1.8 is a backlight-sensitive lens.

Depending on how hard you provoke it, you can get anything from a "nice effect" to completely useless.

Here are some examples from photo practice; I didn't intentionally construct any bad scenarios.

When the aperture is open you get easily visible contrast losses and flares:

When stopped down to provoke sun stars, the flares are definitely limited.

Small blobs, but nothing ruining the image:

In the following extreme backlight shots against the low sun you can see the biggest problem with the lens:

The more you dim down, the worse the effect of stray light between the untreated (steel) aperture blades and the sensor -

There is a clear brightening (hotspot) in the center of the image.

Surprisingly, this problem is actually greater in diffuse light, as in the following shots, than in direct backlight (all shots at f8):

In general, in my opinion, the hotspot problem isn't that bad.

It gets bigger the further you stop down. At f8 you can really see the problem in shots from time to time.

At f5.6 the phenomenon is significantly smaller - and as the chapter on sharpness shows, the Schacht is already sharp right into the corners.

Nevertheless, you have to keep a close eye on it when taking the picture.

Bildserie: "Nach dem großen Regen" / Picture series: After the heavy rain

When the water finds its way in the spring after a heavy rain, I always find it interesting. Here is a small series of images with mostly longer shutter speeds to get the water flowing smoothly:

Mein Fazit / Conclusion

In my opinion, the Schacht S-Travelon 50mm f1.8 is one of the most interesting representatives of the early fast lenses. Surprisingly powerful for its time of production, and the lens still pleases today with its strong character.

But first the objective evaluation criteria:

The image sharpness is very good in the center from open aperture with a gentle glow, excellent from f2.8 onwards.

The corners of the image need f5.6 to reach a very good level, but are still usable even when the aperture is wide open.

The sharpness performance is also very good at close range, there is no drop-off here.

Distortion is slightly barrel-shaped and chromatic aberration are well controlled, with occasional green bokeh fringing to be found.

The Schacht shows its age  in backlight; contrast drops and flares are to be expected when viewed against the sun. One problem are the hotspots, which become stronger when stopping down.

My assessments of the image rendering are certainly subjective: I like the way the lens draws (which you can also see in the large number of pictures I took with the lens - it somehow smuggles itself to the camera very regularly).

The rendering is very unique - the strong swirl combined with the clearly defined highlights and the enormous sharpness are a very special combination. But this also creates images that I save and that I can recognize and assign to the lens.

I especially enjoy taking portraits with the Schacht. But you shouldn't look for a neutral representation, because that simply doesn't exist with the S-Travelon.

For me, one of the most beautiful historical normal lenses - both in terms of the lens itself and the image results it enables.

I would like to thank Ute Kopka once again for her great pictures.
