Das

Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 AIR

ist der neueste Vertreter der besonders leicht und kompakt konstruierten AIR-Serie des chinesischen Objektivherstellers Viltrox für Kleinbild / Vollformat-Kameras.

Dieses Ultra-Weitwinkel-Objektiv ist äußerst kompakt und leicht geworden, ohne dass dabei bei der Verarbeitung Kompromisse eingegangen wurden.

Das Objektivgehäuse ist aus stabilem Kunststoff, das Anschlussbajonett aus Metall.

Mitgeliefert werden neben den beiden Front und Rückdeckeln auch eine Gegenlichtblende in leichter Tulpenform aus dem gleichen Kunststoff wie das Objektiv selbst.

Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung für das Objektiv sind 199 Dollar bzw. 229 Euro.

Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 AIR

is the latest representative of the particularly light and compact AIR series from the Chinese lens manufacturer Viltrox for 35mm / full-frame cameras.

This ultra-wide-angle lens is extremely compact and lightweight without compromising on workmanship.

The lens housing is made of sturdy plastic, the connection bayonet is made of metal.

In addition to the two front and rear caps, a lens hood in a slight tulip shape made of the same plastic as the lens itself is also included.

The recommended retail price for the lens is $199 or €229.

Das Objektiv ist innenfokussierend, es ändert seine Baulänge nicht.

Der USB-C-Anschluss für zukünftige Firmware-Updates ist im Bajonett untergebracht:

The lens is internally focusing and does not change its length.

Angebracht an eine der Testkameras (hier der Sony Alpha 7RIII) ergibt sich eine für ein UWW-Objektiv sehr kompakte und dabei leichte Kombination.

Die Kamera-Objektiv-Kombination ist dabei auch nicht frontlastig und fühlt sich sehr stimmig an.

When mounted on one of the test cameras (here the Sony Alpha 7RIII), the result is a very compact and lightweight combination for a UWA-lens.

The camera-lens combination is not front-heavy and feels very harmonious.

Auch die mitgelieferte Gegenlichtblende trägt nur wenig auf und bietet neben dem besseren Streulichtschutz auch einen guten Schutz bei unbeabsichtigten Kontakten.

The included lens hood is also minimal and, in addition to providing better protection against stray light, also offers good protection against accidental contact.

Eine wirklich komplette Gesamt-Package, bei der nichts fehlt oder zugekauft werden muss.

A truly complete package where nothing is missing or needs to be purchased separately.

Der Autofokus des Objektives war im Alltag sehr treffsicher und ausreichend schnell.

Ich mache jedoch selten Fotos von sich sehr schnell bewegenden Objekten oder Menschen.

Falls ihr in dieser Hinsicht genauere Informationen braucht, müsst ihr euch nach Tests umschauen, bei denen darauf ein Haupt-Augenmerk gelegt wird.

The lens's autofocus was very accurate and sufficiently fast in everyday use.

However, I rarely take photos of  very fast-moving objects or people.

If you need more detailed information in this regard, you will have to look for tests that focus on this.

Vignettierung:

Die vom Objektiv verursachte Vignettierung bei Offenblende ist gering.

Bei f5.6 ist die Vignettierung verschwunden.

Als nächstes folgen 100%-Vergrößerungen aus der Bildmitte vom Fokuspunkt,

in der gleichen Reihenfolge wie oben:

Vignetting:

The vignetting caused by the lens at wide aperture is minimal.

At f5.6 the vignetting has disappeared.

Next come 100% magnifications from the center of the image from the focus point,

in the same order as above:

Im Bildzentrum ist die Schärfeleistung ab Offenblende f4 hervorragend.

Auch die Kontraste sind ab Offenblende voll da.

Bei f11 ist bereits der Einfluss der Beugung sichtbar und das Schärfeniveau niedriger.

In the image center, the sharpness performance is excellent from an open aperture of f4.

The contrasts are also fully present from the widest aperture.

At f11 the influence of diffraction is already visible and the sharpness level is lower.

Auch in der Bildecke ist die Schärfeleistung ab Offenblende f4 hervorragend,

die Ecke ist aufgrund der Vignettierung minimal dunkler als bei f5.6, f8 und f11.

Auch in der Ecke ist der Einfluss der Beugung sichtbar und das Schärfeniveau bei f11 niedriger.

Zusammenfassung:

Das Objektiv ist über die komplette Diagonale ab Offenblende f4 hervorragend scharf und kontrastreich.

Auch die Bildecken erreichen bereits bei Offenblende ausgezeichnetes Niveau.

Bei f11 macht sich die Beugung durch Schärfeeinbußen bemerkbar.

Es gibt in den Bildecken ganz zarte Restspuren von lateralen chromatischen Aberrationen,

 diese sind jedoch minimal und per 1-Click-Lösung im raw-Konverter rückstandsfrei entfernbar.

Even in the corner of the image, the sharpness performance is excellent from the open aperture of f4,

the corner is slightly darker than at f5.6, f8 and f11 due to vignetting.

The influence of diffraction is also visible in the corner and the sharpness level is lower at f11.

Summary:

The lens is exceptionally sharp and high-contrast across its entire diagonal from aperture f4 onwards.

The corners of the image also reach an excellent level even at wide aperture.

At f11, diffraction becomes noticeable through a loss of sharpness.

There are very slight residual traces of lateral chromatic aberrations in the corners of the image,

 However, these are minimal and can be removed without leaving any residue using a 1-click solution in the raw converter.

Der Schwarzenbergturm ist ein Aussichtsurm in den Wäldern von Saarbrücken, erbaut in den 1930er-Jahren. Eine schöne Nachmittagswanderung führte uns dorthin und über den Campus der Universität.

Die Schärfeleistung des Viltrox, die Farbwiedergabe und die Kontrastleistung sind erstklassig, auch die geringe Verzeichnung ist hervorzuheben.

Teilweise habe ich stürzende Linien (wie sie ja bei einem solch großen Blickwinkel zwingend vorkommen) in der Raw-Entwicklung korrigiert.

The Schwarzenberg Tower is an observation tower in the forests of Saarbrücken, built in the 1930s. A lovely afternoon hike took us there and across the university campus.

The Viltrox's sharpness, color reproduction, and contrast are first-class, and its low distortion is also noteworthy.

I partially corrected converging lines (which inevitably occur with such a wide viewing angle) in the raw development.

Trotz der tulpenförmigen Gegenlichtblende muss man stets gut aufpassen, dass nicht ein eigener Finger mit im Bild landet wie im folgenden Beispiel... :-)

Ein "Nachteil" der enormen Kompaktheit des Objektives.

Despite the tulip-shaped lens hood, you always have to be careful not to get your own finger in the picture, as in the following example... :-)

A "disadvantage" of the lens's enormous compactness.

Von einem ähnlichen Standpunkt aus habe ich die folgenden Aufnahmen erstellt.

Zuerst ein "normales" Bild im Querformat mit den 14mm Brennweite:

First, a "normal" image in landscape format with the 14mm focal length:

eine hervorragende Möglichkeit, wenn selbst die 14mm nicht ausreichend sind:

An excellent option if even the 14mm is not enough:

Die Verzeichnung ist für ein 14mm-Ultraweitwinkel-Objektiv gering,

aber sichtbar wellenförmig mit Schnurrbart.

Sie bleibt in den meisten Aufnahmen unauffällig - zur kompletten Korrektur wäre aber ein spezielles Korrekturprofil notwendig, welches bislang noch nicht zur Verfügung steht.

The distortion is low for a 14mm ultra-wide-angle lens,

but visibly wavy with mustache.

It remains unnoticeable in most images - however, a complete correction would require a special correction profile, which is not yet available.

Der Naturpark Pfälzerwald ist immer einen Ausflug wert, es gibt hier unzählige Naturmonumente zu bestaunen.

Ein besonderes Highlight ist der sogenannte "Teufelstisch", eine Buntsandsteinformation.

Eine schöne Rundwanderung führte uns dahin, und die räumliche Enge direkt am Teufelstisch machten das Viltrox mit seiner Brennweite zu einem idealen Begleiter, auch für etwas ungewöhnliche "Portraits".

Im Wald konnte ich auch die ein oder andere Detailaufnahme an der Naheinstellgrenze machen, so ergeben sich wirklich interessante Perspektiven:

The Palatinate Forest Nature Park is always worth a visit; there are countless natural monuments to admire here.

A special highlight is the so-called "Devil's Table", a red sandstone formation.

A beautiful circular hike led us there, and the limited space right next to the Devil's Table made the Viltrox, with its focal length, an ideal companion, even for somewhat unusual "portraits."

In the forest, I was also able to take a few detailed shots at the close-up limit, which creates really interesting perspectives:

Auf Farbfehler ist das Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 Air gut korrigiert.

Wie im Schärfekapitel bereits geschrieben, gibt es zarte Spuren von lateralen chromatischen Aberrationen, die jedoch per 1-Click-Lösung im Raw-Konverter verschwinden.

The Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 Air is well corrected for chromatic aberrations.

As already mentioned in the sharpness chapter, there are subtle traces of lateral chromatic aberrations, which, however, disappear with a one-click solution in the raw converter.

Auch die longitudinalen chromatischen Aberrationen sind kein Problem, weder Bokeh-Fringing noch Purple Fringing sind ein Thema.

Longitudinal chromatic aberrations are also not a problem; neither bokeh fringing nor purple fringing are an issue.

Wenn es um das Hintergrundrendering geht, gibt es immer viele gegensätzliche Meinungen. 

Denn ob einem die Darstellung eines Objektives gefällt oder nicht, ist einfach Geschmackssache.

Der Eine möchte alles butterweich aufgelöst haben, der Andere mag es busy mit viel Outlining und Strukturen und/oder Swirl (und natürlich gibt es ganz viel zwischen diesen Extremen in der Mitte)...

Das Viltrox ist grundsätzlich für ein Ultra-Weitwinkelobjektiv relativ weich bei der Hintergrunddarstellung. Natürlich darf man bei einer Brennweite von 14mm und "nur f4" keine Freistellungs-Wunder erwarten.

Es gibt vereinzelt Outlining, aber Highlights werden nicht mit durch eine Linie begrenzten Bubbles dargestellt.

Die folgende Reihe zeigt die Entwicklung der Hintergrundunschärfe beim Abblenden.

Der Fokus lag auf der Schraube rechts im Bild, Distanz zu dieser war etwa 60 Zentimeter.

Die Blendenwerte sind  f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11:

When it comes to background rendering, there are always many conflicting opinions. 

Because whether you like the image quality of a lens or not is simply a matter of taste.

Some people want everything to be completely smooth, others prefer it busy with lots of outlining and structures and/or swirls (and of course, there's a lot in between these extremes in the middle)...

The Viltrox is generally relatively soft in its background rendering for an ultra-wide-angle lens. Of course, with a focal length of 14mm and "only f/4," you can't expect any miracles in terms of defocusing.

There is some outlining, but highlights are not shown with bubbles delimited by a line.

The following series shows the development of background blur when stopping down.

The focus was on the screw on the right side of the image, the distance to it was about 60 centimeters.

The aperture values are f4 - f5.6 - f8 - f11:

Bereits bei Offenblende ist das Rendering der Hintergründe weich und unaufgeregt, zu den Ecken hin aber etwas "verschmiert".

Beim Abblenden bleibt diese Grundcharakteristik erhalten

Auch mein anderes häufig gezeigtes Testmotiv zeigt dies schön:

Even at wide aperture, the rendering of the backgrounds is soft and unexciting, but somewhat "smeared" towards the corners.

When stopping down, this basic characteristic is retained

My other frequently shown test motif also shows this nicely:

Auch an der Naheinstellgrenze von nur 14cm zeigt sich diese grundsätzliche Charakteristik.

Erkennbar ist auch, dass bei f4 die Blendenlamellen nicht komplett geöffnet sind, sondern schon minimal geschlossen, denn die Highlights zeigen die Lamellenform.

Zu den Ecken hin werden diese Highlights nach außen verzerrt, was zum etwas nervösen Eindruck beiträgt:

This basic characteristic is also evident at the close-up limit of just 14cm.

It is also noticeable that at f4 the aperture blades are not fully open, but already minimally closed, because the highlights show the blade shape.

Towards the corners, these highlights are distorted outwards, which contributes to the somewhat nervous impression:

Auf größere Fokusdistanz ist kein Unterschied im Bildrendering mehr zu erkennen, es ergeben sich durch das Abblenden nur minimale Schärfeunterschiede in der Eckleistung:

At a longer focus distance, no difference in image rendering is noticeable; stopping down results in only minimal sharpness differences in corner performance:

Doch zurück zum "Bokeh" und Rendering auf kurze Distanz.

In der Nähe der Naheinstellgrenze ergeben sich durchaus interessante Bildwirkungen.

Die Schärfe am Fokuspunkt bleibt hierbei sehr gut, und der große Blickwinkel gepaart mit der sich ergebenden Unschärfe sind spannend, wenn auch das Rendering teilweise je nach Hintergrund  nervös ist:

But back to "bokeh" and short-range rendering.

Near the minimum focusing distance, some very interesting image effects can be achieved.

The sharpness at the focal point remains very good, and the wide viewing angle paired with the resulting blur are exciting, even if the rendering is sometimes nervous depending on the background:

Auf mittlere Distanzen gibt es dann sehr schnell nur noch wenig Unschärfe im Hintergrund.

Aber mal Hand aufs Herz, wer kauft ein 14mm-Ultraweitwinkelobjektiv für Bokeh-Shots?

At medium distances there is very quickly only a little blur in the background.

But let's be honest, who buys a 14mm ultra-wide-angle lens for bokeh shots?

Die unter Denkmalschutz stehende Jugendstil-Industriehalle "Gasmaschinenzentrale des Bergwerk Heinitz" habe ich an einem regnerischen Tag mit dementsprechend spektakulären Himmel besucht.

Leider ist nur eine Seite der Halle frei zugänglich, an die architektonisch viel interessantere Seite mit den spektakulären großen Glasflächen kommt man denk Absperrungen nicht heran.

Schade, dass trotz Denkmalschutz ein so interessantes Bauwerk verfällt und nicht der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wird.

I visited the listed Art Nouveau industrial hall "Gas Machinery Center of the Heinitz Mine" on a rainy day with a correspondingly spectacular sky.

Unfortunately, only one side of the hall is freely accessible; the architecturally much more interesting side with the spectacular large glass surfaces is inaccessible due to barriers.

It is a pity that, despite being a listed building, such an interesting  monument is falling into disrepair and is not made accessible to the public.

Auch hier habe ich zwei ähnliche Bilder erstellt, zuerst das "normale" Querformat-Bild bei 14mm:

Die Farben des Spätsommers sind in meinen Augen immer wunderschön - irgendwie wärmer als im Früh- und Hochsommer.

Besonders genieße ich die Spätnachmittage und Abende, wenn die Sonne schon tief steht und man mit ihrem Stand in den Bildern "spielen" kann.

Dabei muss sich das Viltrox natürlich auch extrem gegen die Sonne beweisen:

The colors of late summer are always beautiful in my eyes—somehow warmer than in early and mid-summer.

I especially enjoy the late afternoons and evenings when the sun is already low in the sky and you can "play" with its position in the pictures.

Of course, the Viltrox also has to prove itself extremely to be resistant to the sun:

Wie die vorhergehende Serie ja schon bewiesen hat,

ist das Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 Air im Gegenlicht gut zu gebrauchen, wenn man den ein oder anderen Flare akzeptieren kann.

Ich habe hier einige gestellte Szenarien für euch durchexerziert, die aber in meinen Augen nur wenig der Praxis entsprechen. Trotzdem will ich sie hier zeigen als Worst-Case-Szenarien.

Wir starten bei Offenblende f4 direkt gegen die Sonne im Zentrum:

As the previous series has already proven,

The Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 Air is good for backlighting if you can accept the occasional flare.

I've worked through a few staged scenarios for you here, although in my opinion they have little relevance to reality. Nevertheless, I'd like to present them here as worst-case scenarios.

We start at aperture f4 directly against the sun in the center:

Je nach Verdeckungsgrad sind die Flares auffälliger, der Kontrastverlust ist nicht stark.

Das gleiche Szenario habe ich auch auf f11 abgeblendet fotografiert:

Depending on the degree of occlusion, the flares are more noticeable, but the loss of contrast is not significant.

I also photographed the same scenario at f11:

Hier zeigen sich deutlichere Reflexe strahlartig zu den Bildecken.

Diese sind aber im Ausmaß gut durch leichtes verschwenken zu beeinflussen.

Auch bei der nächsten Szene zuerst 2 Aufnahmen bei Offenblende f4:

Here, clearer reflections appear in a beam-like manner towards the corners of the image.

However, the extent of these can be easily influenced by slightly panning.

Also in the next scene first 2 shots at open aperture f4:

Hier gibt es keine Probleme, ebensowenig auf f11 abgeblendet:

There are no problems here, nor when stopped down to f11:

Die Sonnensterne sind ab f11 durchaus attraktiv, leider jeoch sind die Strahlen unterschiedlich lang.

Zum Abschluss ein letztes Szenario mit abnehmender Verdeckung der Sonne:

The sun stars are quite attractive from f11 onwards, but unfortunately the rays are of different lengths.

Finally, a final scenario with decreasing occultation of the sun:

Insgesamt also keine spitzenmäßige Performance in diesem Kapitel,

aber absolut zeitgemäß.

Für deutlich bessere Leistung muss man auch deutlich mehr Geld ausgeben.

Overall, no top performance in this chapter, but absolutely contemporary.

For significantly better performance, you'll have to spend significantly more money.

Das Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 Air ist in meinen Augen das ideale, unkomplizierte, kompakte und leichte Ultraweitwinkelobjektiv zum Mitnehmen auf Reisen. Es bietet eine zeitgemäße Performance in allen Bereichen ohne extreme Schwächen.

Zuerst möchte ich die objektiven Testergebnisse noch einmal zusammenfassen:

Ausgezeichnete Schärfe über die komplette Diagonale ab Offenblende f4, auch die Bildecken haben dieses Niveau. 

Bei f5.6 ist die Vignette verschwunden, bei f4 ist sie noch leicht bemerkbar.

Die Verzeichnung ist nur gering und in den Gesamtbildern kaum auffällig - hier wäre aufgrund der Wellenform ein entsprechendes Korrekturprofil seitens des Herstellers toll.

Die chromatischen Aberrationen sind insgesamt kein Problem: Die lateralen CAs sind kaum sichtbar und per 1-Click-Lösung im Raw-Konverter verschwunden, die longitudinalen Aberrationen sind unauffällig.

Im Gegenlicht schlägt sich das Viltrox recht gut, nur bei extremen Situationen ergeben sich leicht Flares gegenüber der Lichtquelle.

Die Sonnensterne sind ab f11 recht definiert, die Strahlen haben aber unterschiedliche Längen. Hier könnte eine andere Blendenkonstruktion leicht eine große Verbesserung bringen. 

Insgesamt also bleibt nur das Gegenlichtverhalten, das nur mittelmäßig ist, als Kritikpunkt übrig - 

fast unglaublich bei einem Budget-Ultra-Weitwinkelobjektiv.

Neben diesen harten Fakten hat mir das Fotografieren mit dem Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 Air viel Spaß bereitet.

Es ist ein herrlich unkompliziertes Ultra-Weitwinkelobjektiv. Das Gestalten von Bildern mit diesem großen Bildwinkel ist nicht so einfach, es gibt halt immer sehr viel Raum, der eingefangen wird. Durch die hohe Schärfe bis in die Ecke selbst bei Offenblende ist die Nutzung in Innenräumen auch aus der Hand unkritisch, weil man bei f4 meist auch mit moderaten ISO-Werten auskommt. 

Viltrox hat es mit diesem Objektiv geschafft, für  einen sensationellen Preis ein sehr leistungsstarkes, kompaktes und leichtes Ultra-Weitwinkel-Objektiv zu bauen, das perfekt für Landschafts-, Städte- und Reiseaufnahmen geeignet ist und das man aufgrund des Form-Faktors auch auf Verdacht einfach mal mitnehmen kann.

In my opinion, the Viltrox AF FE 14mm f/4 Air is the ideal, uncomplicated, compact and lightweight ultra-wide-angle lens for traveling. It offers contemporary performance across the board without any major weaknesses.

First, I would like to summarize the objective test results:

Excellent sharpness across the entire diagonal from aperture f4, even the corners of the image are at this level. 

At f5.6 the vignette has disappeared, at f4 it is still slightly noticeable.

The distortion is only slight and hardly noticeable in the overall images - due to the waveform, a corresponding correction profile from the manufacturer would be great.

The chromatic aberrations are not a problem overall: the lateral CAs are barely visible and disappear with a one-click solution in the raw converter, the longitudinal aberrations are unobtrusive.

The Viltrox performs quite well in backlighting, only in extreme situations does it flare slightly diagonally to the light source.

The sunstars are quite defined from f/11 onward, but the rays have different lengths. A different aperture design could easily make a significant improvement here. 

Overall, the only criticism left is the backlighting, which is only mediocre - 

almost unbelievable for a budget ultra-wide angle lens.

Besides these hard facts, I had a lot of fun shooting with the Viltrox AF FE 14mm f4 Air.

It's a wonderfully uncomplicated ultra-wide-angle lens. Creating images with such a wide angle of view isn't easy, as there's always a lot of space to capture. The high sharpness right into the corners, even at wide apertures, makes it easy to use indoors, even handheld, because at f/4, moderate ISO values are usually sufficient.
